Matthew studied composition at the Junior RNCM with Gavin Wayte and Matthew Sergeant and subsequently at Oxford University with Deborah Pritchard and Mena Mark Hanna, where he also participated in workshops with Robert Saxton. Matthew also studied orchestration with John Traill, achieving a first class mark for his final portfolio for orchestrations of Benjamin Britten’s piano music. Matthew has had his works performed by soprano Lucy Cox, the Leicestershire Sinfonia, the Leicestershire Schools’ Training Orchestra and the Leicestershire Schools’ Flute Choir, and has had a flute choir work commissioned by flautist Atarah Ben-Tovim.
Matthew is active as a composer, arranger, and orchestrator. He has done reduced orchestrations of two Holst operas Savitri and The Wandering Scholar for performances with Lighthouse Productions and also made a chamber orchestra arrangement of Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite for the Leicestershire Sinfonia. He is currently working on several orchestral reductions , to enable large symphonic works to be performed in small venues, and also new works and arrangements of orchestral repertoire for wind orchestra.
